How to pronounce these “Mobile Alabama” words

You can’t trust siri or your navigation voice of choice to get it right. Just ask any native Mobilian and they will be quick to tell you when you’re wrong and set you on the path of fitting right in with all the other locals. With a “Bless Your Heart” at the end of course.

If you’re moving to Mobile Alabama from out of town like many of my clients, you often have to learn the hard way. My hope is this simple guide will save you from embarrassment.

GRELOT

This word has taken the auto-correct on my iPhone years to finally get right. It’s not Greenlight, Greylock, or Grill Lott! Say this phrase, “I agree a lot”. Then say Gree Lot. That’s it. Grelot!

If you are living in Mobile, Alabama, you will love this road, most of the time. It’s often a bypass when you don’t want to use Airport or Cottage Hill.

SCHILLINGER

This word is singular! There is no S at the end. And to top it off, Siri still can’t get it right. Schillinger is becoming the second busiest street in all of Mobile. It’s the new Airport Blvd. of West Mobile. I’m not sure where the plural version came from but it’s not true. There’s only one Schillinger road and that is enough!

ZEIGLER

This is not only the name of a popular street in Mobile but also the name of my dad’s favorite brand of Hot dogs. The I is not long when you say it. Just think of my favorite motivational speaker from the past, Zig Ziglar. That’s how it sounds.

SEMMES

This is a city just north of Mobile. Just think of Sims. That’s it. Don’t overthink it. I have heard this word absolutely butchered. Many want to give it more than one syllable, but don’t give in to the temptation. Keep it simple. Say it fast. Sims.

CRICHTON

This word is strange, that is for sure. If you are struggling with this, just visit Youtube and search for the now world-famous leprechaun and you will hear the correct pronunciation. I’ve heard it pronounced Crick-ton, which is understandable, but not acceptable. Get this one right. The locals can smell this one a mile away if you don’t get it perfect. I can’t give you any insight on how to say it, you just have to be here. Visit Roshell’s. They will help you out.

Which other words did I miss? I know there are several more, so let me know. Follow me on Instagram at @jeffjonesagent and let me know.

Until next time, remember, if you aren’t sure, just ask someone, they’ll be glad to show you how! That’s one thing that makes this place so special. Folks are, for the most part…really nice!
